Japanese contractor Shimizu Corp. announced on March 29 that it was awarded a contract by Government of Ghana to build a research center for infectious diseases. Japan provides a grand aid up to 2.28 billion yen for the project. The construction is scheduled to begin in July 2018. The center will be constructed at Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research in the area of University of Ghana in the capital city of Accra. The 5,000m2 laboratory, designed by Nihon Sekkei and Fujita Planning, will have a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory which can deal with highly hazardous virus.
As infectious diseases are major health problems in Ghana, measures against diseases are among the most important policies. Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research plays a significant role in tackling infectious diseases in West Africa. Shimizu will apply its engineering technologies and experiences in construction of medical research facilities. (2017/03/30)
