Obayashi Corp. to introduce Energy Management System at Technical Research Institute

Obayashi Corp. will establish Energy Management System at its research center in Kiyose city, Tokyo, aiming to conduct experiments toward next-generation Smart City. Along with installation of 900kw solar cells equivalent to its electricity consumption and big data analysis, the Energy Management System (EMS) will be introduced to adjust a fluctuating demand-supply balance of energy. The installation is scheduled to complete in November 2014.

With a cooperation of Research Institute for Advanced Network Technology at Waseda University, Obayashi hopes to accumulate technologies through this experimental projects that will be useful for its future businesses such as urban development. In addition to solar power generations, other equipment such as “Micro-Combined Power Generating System,” which generates electricity by gas and a large-capacity storage battery will be installed, which helps to peak-cut and level electricity usage. Energy supply and demand is precisely projected on conditions such as climate, temperature, operations of air conditioning and past records. Combined with Obayashi’s Smart Information Modeling System (SCIM), a platform for digital representations of buildings, it enables visualization of facility operation and energy consumption.

After introduction of the system, the amount of electricity purchase and CO2 emission in 2015 will decrease by 20% from 2012. Because it will be equipped with independent power generators, business continuity at the time of emergency will be secured in the Technical Research Institute. (2013/10/24)
