On April 24, Osaka IR, the project operator for the integrated resort development on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Konohana Ward, Osaka City, held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the commencement of main construction works. The large-scale project, which aims to establish a major international tourism hub that will drive Osaka’s economic growth, is targeting an opening in the summer of 2030.

In his opening remarks, the Representative Director of Osaka IR emphasized, "We aspire to build a new gateway connecting Osaka, Kansai, Japan, and the world, creating encounters and emotions here that will fuel future vitality."

An executive of Orix Corporation, Co-Representative Director of Osaka IR, said, "As Japan’s first integrated resort, we will deliver world-class facilities offering wonder and excitement. We will unite our efforts with governmental bodies, shareholders, designers, and builders to realize this vision."

Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura of Osaka underscored the significance of the project, stating, "The IR will create an overwhelmingly extraordinary space, generating new demand in tourism and business, and serving as a catalyst for Osaka’s economic growth."

Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama of Osaka City highlighted the scale and impact of the project, noting, "With an investment exceeding ¥1 trillion, the IR is expected to attract 20 million visitors annually. Integrated with the development of the entire Bay Area, it will become a pillar shaping the future of Osaka."

According to the development plan formulated by Osaka IR in collaboration with the Osaka Prefectural and City governments, the total floor area of the IR facilities will range between approximately 731,000 and 848,000 square meters. The complex will include MICE facilities, hotels, theaters, commercial establishments, pavilions, a casino, and landscaped green and waterfront areas.

The construction of the hotel housing the casino, "MGM Osaka," will be undertaken by a group led by Takenaka Corporation, while construction of facilities in other blocks will be handled by Obayashi Corporation and others. (2025/04/25)
