On April 10, Japanese construction company Takenaka Corporation announced that it had successfully reduced carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 6,020 tons at the Pavilion World (PW) West Zone of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, through its "Circular Design and Build" initiative aimed at significantly mitigating environmental impact. This reduction is equivalent to the amount of CO₂ absorbed annually by approximately 684 hectares of forest, an area about 4.4 times larger than the total site area of the construction zone. As the Expo approaches its opening, Takenaka highlighted this achievement as a tangible contribution to the Expo's core theme of sustainability, demonstrating environmental stewardship from the construction phase onward.

Takenaka was responsible for the detailed design and construction of 23 facilities within the approximately 20.4-hectare West Zone. In line with the Expo Association's action plan promoting the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—the company prioritized the adoption of reusable materials and efforts to reduce both resource inputs and waste generation, anticipating the eventual dismantling of structures after the Expo’s conclusion. Particular emphasis was placed on reducing "upfront carbon" (UC) emissions, which are generated from material production through construction activities. (2025/04/11)
