Two New Symbols of Tokyo Open on the Same Day New landmarks of Tokyo were born on November 1 in Ikebukuro and Shibuya. Shibuya Scramble Square and Hareza Ikebukuro are expected to become new destinations in Tokyo.
Shibuya Scramble Square East Tower was developed by Tokyu, JR East and Tokyo Metro. The opening ceremony was held with attendance of Mayor of Shibuya Ken Hasebe and other guests. President of the operating company Noriaki Takahide said that the opening of the building would contribute to improvement of accessibility of the area, strengthened disaster resistance, and stronger international competitiveness. The rooftop will be observatory facility called Shibuya Sky offering a 360-degree view of the area.
47-story skyscraper is the tallest building in the area with 230 meter in hight with total 181,000m2 floor. The building was designed by Kengo Kuma, SANAA, Nikken Sekkei etc. Contractors are Tokyu Constrution and Taisei.
Hareza Ikebukuro is a multi-purpose building with a 1,300-seat hall, movie theaters, and offices which is developed jointly by Toshima-ku and the private sector. At the ceremony, Mayor Takano said, “the new era of Toshima has started. We will create a world-renowned international culture base.” Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo, said, “Ikebukuro is getting more and more attention. I am confident that it will be an exciting area for Tokyo residents.” The 80,000m2 hall and complex were designed and constructed by Kajima. (2019/11/05)
