Architect Kengo Kuma Explains Design of Japan’s New National Stadium

New renderings of the New National Stadium to be built in Tokyo were revealed on October 28 at the press conference held by the Japan Sports Council. The main venue of the 2020 Olympic Games will have a concept of the stadium of woods connecting sports and green of the neighboring Meiji Jingu Gaien. Interior of the facility will introduce Japanese traditional designs, while timber structure integrating with green will represent the unique exterior.

The appointed contractor Taisei Corp. will begin earth excavation in December followed by the construction of underground structures. Completion is expected in November 2019. Mr. Kuma explains to the press that the design of the ceiling of the VIP zone adopted Japanese traditional Origami and Yamato-bari technique with delicate artisan works. (2016/10/31)
